On this road all our supplies come in on articulated transport trucks. Visitor buses in the summer! There were two fatal mishaps on The Hill in its 49 year history: one in bad winter driving conditions and the driver having been strongly adviced not to travel, one due to drunken driving. To any European driver I can say: several Alpine pass roads are more demanding (e.g Spluegen/Spigua, Stilfser Joch/Stelvio) with many switch backs and a lot of traffic wheras traffic on The Hill may be such that you do not encounter even one other vehicle. There are many bays to make room and let a truck pass, if need be. Without a trailer in tow the 18km take about 1/2 hour to drive at moderate to slow speeds. |
