 On firm ground

Some hikes begin right along Highway 20. One two hour ascent begins at B&B Nusatsm House proper and brings you up to a former fire lookout on Medby Rock. At the bridge ovver Nusatsum River take the Forestry Road and drive c. 24km to Odegaard Falls. An asy trail leads through old growth forest to the foot of the falls.

Sometimes 4x4 vehicles can make it across an avalanche path and drive on to Purgatory Lookout. Be forewarned, your car's paint job may get scratched (road not brushed). Avalanch snows can linger into August and you’ll have to walk it. It’s well worth the effort (about 2 hrs one way)!

Another great drive (4x4 mandatory) leads up Clayton Falls creek. There are though many swales or water bars to overcome. From the Jay Lakes campsite it's an easy and most rewarding hike to the spectacular views from Bentinck Arms Lookout. There are other hiking opportunities beginning near the summit just past KM 17. The hike south on the ridge offers grand vistas!

At the outset into Clayton Falls creek there are the falls, right behind our hydropower station. On the bridge to the 'dry land sort' check whether any seals are looking for really fresh fish.

On the shore across from the generator there is Clayton Falls Recreation Area, a charming spot of mossy forest with picnic tables and grand views across and out the inlet. Often there are seals nearby looking for fish at the mouth of the creek or lazing on logs farther out. Across North Bentinck Arm you will spot the buildings of Old Talheo Cannery.

Also an interesting place to explore is the Net Loft at the wharf!

Farther up the Bella Coola valley at Burnt Bridge creek begins Tweedsmuir Park. Right at the entrance the easy Loop Trail starts with a side trip to the look out above the bridge. There are many pleasant day trip possibilities aside from the arduous task of hiking the Grease Trail, the route Alexander Mackenzie followed some 200 years ago on his search for the Pacific.

At the bottom of the Hill Tote road takes you a ways into the Atnarko Canyon It may be level but it is very rough going with deep pot holes and rock debris, do not attempt it with a sedan or minivan as you need generous ground clearance. From the parking lot there lead trails to the lakes below (easy, short hike of 3/4 hrs to Stillwater Lake) and above Hunlen Falls to Turner Lakes (long and strenuous).

Once you have gained the heights of Heckman Pass the Rainbow Mountains are in reach. In a mere two hours you make it above the forest and have the Coast Mountains behind you and the Chilcotin Plateau spread before your eyes. Awesome sights, often available, even if it is overcast or raining down below.

Finally, in winter there are breathtaking heli-skiing opportunities. The helicopter flights are short, hence the price is right. A 10 minute flight brings you into winter landscapes with no one else but you and your fellow skiers. B&B Nusatsm House offers you warmth and comfort when you're back from a day in the glorious snow and sun.
