Yes, you may meet bears on the road. And fishing is just off the road at Fisheries Pool. Some time ago Norwegian settlers homesteaded in the upper valley at Belarko.
How about Matterhorn Peak - err, not the real thing, but still a great view. Drive into side valleys close to the glaciers (Cahootin FR). Winter half of year .. safe for any hike, bears are dormant.
